You’re no doubt aware that Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system, but you might not be aware of how large it actually is. You might think that Mercury, being the closest planet to the Sun, has the hottest surface. While this might seem strange, when you couple it with the fact that Mercury has an elliptical orbit (the most of any planet) then it has a very curious effect. We’ve only just begun to explore the worlds that lie beyond our own, but in the decades since the first space probes left the Earth, our knowledge of our neighboring planets has grown exponentially. In 2006, when the International Astronomical Union voted to demote Pluto to dwarf planet status, the number of officially recognized planets was reduced from nine to eight. It is owned by the National Grape Cooperative Association, a co-op of grape growers.
Each orbit has the shape of an ellipse, which is essentially a flattened circle. The center of our solar system is the Sun, which is the largest body in our solar system. It formed about 4.6 billion years ago when a dense region of molecular clouds collapsed to form the Sun and a protoplanetary disk. Knowing about the planets and smaller celestial bodies in our solar system helps answer critical questions about their formation. These planets circle around the sun (as I’m sure you know already) this is called orbits. Farther out, near the orbit of Neptune and beyond the orbit of the minor planet Pluto, sits another belt known as the Kuiper Belt. The Asteroid Belt sits between the orbits of the planets Jupiter and Mars, composed of thousands of objects too small to be considered planets. The other 4 are the outer planets, also known as the “gas giants.”
